Dealing with the loss of someone close to us can be very difficult for anyone to handle. When my girlfriend’s mom died of course it was devastating. Shortly after her mom’s passing she started to realize how much she was forgetting things. Super organized, always on the ball and a perfectionist her forgetfulness really started to distress her. Forgetting an appointment or misplacing her keys again and again would throw her straight into a anxiety attack. However, she immediately thought that this forgetfulness must be from some sort of undiagnosed disease and then those thoughts would attack her… what if it’s cancer or a brain tumor? What if I die? Why can’t I get this Panic away from me?

She began feeling unsure of herself, unable to focus or concentrate and scattered as more time went by. Her irrational, obsessive thoughts would make her spiral out of control and her anxiety attacks were frightening. On the internet for several hours she would be trying to find out which disease sounded like hers. She was certain she was going crazy. She wouldn’t talk about her anxiety attacks with any friends or family believing that they would all think she’s going crazy too. She was scared.

Death is a huge tragedy and grieving is normal and takes time. It’s not uncommon to feel forgetful, overwhelmed or scatter-brained. Because her mind couldn’t think logically at the time, she became obsessed running to the doctor every time she’d forget something, her obsessive thoughts seemed completely normal. When the doctor diagnosed her with General Anxiety Disorder she was happy because she felt relief but scared because she didn’t know how to make her anxiety go away.

So you can see at the root of her anxiety was the fear was dying, especially after seeing her mother die. Having a fear of something sets off anxiety or panic. Battle with panic or anxiety attacks? Ask yourself what you’re afraid of.She would wake up at night trembling because her irrational thoughts would consume her.
