Can Panic AttacksBe Dangerous?

It’s clear that someone in the middle of a panic attack might feel as if they’re at risk of physical harm. Panic attacks are a common cause of emergency room visits for just this reason.

What are the physical dangers of panic attacks? Is your body at risk of harm due to the panic attack itself?

Fortunately it is extremely unlikely that anyone would suffer significant physical harm from a single or occasional panic attack. Long-standing stress isanother matter. Chronic stress can indeed cause problems if it lasts long enough.

As far as panic attacks go, the more dangerous effects are psychological and emotional. A person at risk for unexpected and uncontrollable panic attacks understandably can be anxious. Depression is also a common psychological side effect.

In addition, people who have experienced a panic attack will understandably try to avoid anything that they think might trigger another one. Yhis can lead the person into a very restricted way of living .

One distinctionto be aware of is that sometimes physical problems can mimic or trigger a panic attack. In particular some forms of cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) can trigger anxiety and may be confused with a panic attack.

So even though a panic attack itself is unlikely to cause physical harm is over is a good idea to have a thorough physical evaluation to be sure that there is not an underlying physical health issue.

Once you’re sure the problem is indeed a panic attack the good news is that there are a lot of effective treatment forms available today.
